The Festival originated as a commemoration of Qu Yuan, a beloved poet and statesman from ancient China. Legend has it that Qu Yuan, in despair over the fate of his country, threw himself into the Miluo River. Local villagers raced their boats to try to save him, throwing rice into the water to keep fish away from his body.
